Weber IDF overhaul

Downdraught Webers for the air-cooled classics, sharply set up again.

By Team Carburateur Service Nederland

The Weber IDF: the downdraught Weber you'll find on the finest air-cooled classics. Loved for its direct throttle response and that unmistakable induction roar. Take a look below, then read about our approach.

Weber carburettors on the workbench.

What is a Weber IDF?

The IDF is a downdraught carburettor: the air flows from the top straight down into the engine. Each IDF has two bores (twin-choke), so you can fit one per pair of cylinders. You'll often find them in pairs or as a whole bank, lined up neatly on the engine block.

At Carburateur Service Nederland they arrive on the workbench in every imaginable condition. Sometimes brand new, but usually after years of standing still, with weathered gaskets and petrol vapour from decades ago. And that's exactly the work we love.

Where will you find the Weber IDF?

The IDF is the classic choice for air-cooled boxer engines. Think of the VW Beetle and Bus, the Porsche 356 and 911, but also various kit cars and V engines. Wherever enthusiasts want more response and character than a standard carburettor offers, the IDF turns up.

Looking for the horizontal sidedraught Weber instead? That's the DCOE, a different carburettor with a story of its own. Read all about it in our separate Weber DCOE article.

Our approach: a thorough overhaul, never a quick polish

Every complete set of Webers gets the full treatment from us:

Below are a few complete sets that came in to us, sometimes after 20 years of storage in a shed or attic. And yet we often manage to bring them back to life.

Do it yourself, or leave it to us?

Got a set of Webers on the shelf you'd like to tackle yourself, but unsure what's still good? Send us a photo or a short video via WhatsApp or email and we'll gladly take a look with you, free of obligation. Rather have us do the work? Happy to. We love the spanner work, not secrets.

Follow your overhaul live

With us, you watch while we work. You follow your carburettor step by step: arrival, disassembly, ultrasonic cleaning, reassembly and final inspection. You receive photo updates throughout the overhaul, fresh from the workbench. So you always know where your carburettor is, and you see the craftsmanship with your own eyes.
