Many carburettor symptoms are caused by wear to parts that are missing from a standard service kit. Think of worn jet tubes and seats: they are often pressed into the carburettor body and can wear down considerably. After years of use, carburettors show wear on their internal working parts. Symptoms we come across regularly, such as a CO reading that is too high at the annual emissions test, stem from worn parts like jet tubes and jet needles. Models such as the Stromberg, Zenith or Solex 175CD are common examples.
Why a service kit alone is only half the story
Parts such as jet tubes and seats are often pressed in and therefore fall outside a standard service kit, even though they can wear down heavily. On carburettors with these pressed-in parts, precision work is required to replace them correctly. For that we use a 10-tonne press in our workshop, pressing the parts in with care while keeping the carburettor's delicate aluminium intact.
Replacing pressed-in parts is specialist work. Jet tubes and seats are fitted under high pressure with a precision press, because they play a part in the air-fuel ratio. When they are worn, the mixture often runs too rich, which in turn raises the CO emissions.
You only see the difference up close
At first glance the photos seem to show little out of the ordinary, but there is a clear difference between the left and right jet tube. The left one is new, shiny and undamaged, while the right one is old, with visible wear and discolouration. You only notice it once you look at it side-on or straight into it.
The photos illustrate perfectly how worn such a part can be. Look at the difference in diameter of the right jet tube, even though both jet tubes share 'the same' dimensions. The performance of this Stromberg 175CD is heavily affected as a result.
Pressing with precision
In the photo you can see how we press a jet tube into the carburettor body. The body is made of Zamak, a zinc and aluminium alloy widely used for carburettors. Because the pressing forces are enormous, the press always wins against the body, so precision is crucial to prevent damage. This process makes sure the jet tube sits firmly in place and the carburettor keeps performing reliably for years to come.
